Some places in Rome never truly close, they just wait. Teatro Valle is one of them. Since 2010, the curtain had been still, the lights off, the boxes silent. But just a few meters from us, because Teatro Valle is literally our neighbor, set in the same historic center as Palazzo Navona, restoration work has been quietly underway. On 16 October 2026, Rome’s theatre will finally raise its curtain again. We wanted to be the ones to tell you, as neighbors.
The building was constructed around 1530 by Lorenzo Lotti, known as "il Lorenzetto", for Cardinal Andrea della Valle. After the cardinal's death in 1534, it passed to his niece Faustina and her husband Camillo Capranica, becoming known as Palazzo Capranica. Commissioned by Camillo Capranica to continue a passion for theatre begun by his grandfather Pompeo, the theatre was designed by architect Tommaso Morelli and opened on 7 January 1727 with the tragedy Matilde.
In 1822 the Papal Government ordered the wooden theatre rebuilt in masonry for safety reasons. Giuseppe Valadier's ambitious expansion plan was rejected, and after the collapse of an arch built for the stage, the commission passed to Gaspare Salvi, who completed the works. The new theatre opened on 26 December 1822 with Filippo Celli's opera Il Corsaro. Further renovations followed over the decades, including Francesco Podesti's 1888 floral decorations and Silvio Galimberti's 1930s ceiling repainting.
When Does Teatro Valle Reopen?
Teatro Valle will reopen on 16 October 2026, inaugurating the 2026–2027 season of Fondazione Teatro di Roma. The opening production will be Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author. The choice is no coincidence: on 9 May 1921, this very stage hosted one of the most famous opening-night failures in theatre history and, at the same time, the premiere of a masterpiece. The Valle will reopen with a new identity as the Casa della Drammaturgia Contemporanea, the House of Contemporary Dramaturgy.
